Will my credit/debit card work overseas?

Credit cards from most major banks will work overseas but there are a few things to note:

  • Remember to inform your bank that you are traveling so they know to expect overseas transactions on your account. If they are not informed they may assume that your card is being used fraudulently and put a 'freeze' on transactions.
  • Make sure before you travel that your card is compatible with foreign machines and also that you will not be charged an astronomical withdrawal fee for using a foreign ATM. ATMs with your bank’s logo or card displayed should not charge fees for international withdrawals.
  • Generally credit cards are accepted at larger retail chain stores, restaurants, hotels etc. Small businesses and family-run stores may not accept credit cards; it is therefore useful to keep a moderate amount of cash on hand.
Don’t forget the usual safety precautions: handle credit cards and cash discreetly, avoid withdrawing money at night and keep your pin number hidden!
